Using Sustainability Best Practices to Enhance The Performance of Freight Transportation

The integration of sustainability into the freight transportation (FT) sector has garnered increasing interest on a global scale in recent years. One of the most important connections between the integration process and freight carriers' sustainable performance is the implementation of sustainability best practices. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to suggest a list of best sustainability practices that are pertinent to the FT system. In order to reduce the negative effects that freight movements have on the environment and society, it is essential to include sustainability values into freight operations. Through an extensive assessment of the literature, this study finds sustainability best practices that fall into four major categories: organizational, process planning, technology, and collaborative sustainability practices. Expert opinions gathered from focus groups are used to prioritize these practices. In this process, a set of research questions were identified by researchers for structuring the research process properly as follows: (1) What are the best practices for improving sustainable practices for freight transportation? (2) What are the influential and critical factors to measure effects on the sustainability performance of the freight transportation? (3) What are the contents of the organizational, process-based, planning and management, technological and collaborative practices? (4) Which technological practices can be used for national development such as vehicle information & communication technologies and data analytics technologies?
